Eggshell is the most common choice for finished drywall walls. Use flat for ceilings.

Choosing the Right Paint Finish

Flat / Matte — hides surface imperfections well. Best for ceilings and low-traffic bedrooms.

Eggshell — slight sheen, easy to wipe. The go-to finish for living rooms and hallways on freshly drywalled walls.

Satin — more sheen and durability. Good choice for kitchens and family rooms.

Semi-Gloss / Gloss — highly washable. Standard for trim, doors, and bathrooms. Requires Level 5 finish on walls to hide imperfections.

New Drywall? Use 2 Coats.

Freshly finished drywall is porous and absorbs the first coat heavily. Two coats of paint (after a coat of primer) are standard on new work. Factor this into your gallon calculation.

Drywall Finish Level & Painting

Level 4 — standard for matte and eggshell finishes. Paint will not telegraph seams under normal lighting.

Level 5 — required if you're using gloss paint, raking light is present, or your walls will be under direct artificial light. The full skim coat creates a glass-smooth surface.
